They experienced mishaps along the way, and each animal was able to use their natural strength to save each other. Before Bold dies, Vixen nuzzles him with tenderness and assures him that they will keep watch for Whisper and bring her food when necessary. Colin Dann later wrote an abridged version of 70 pages, which was published in 1993 to accompany the TV series. such excellent reads as 'The Duncton Wood books' 'Little House on the Prairie' and 'Watership Down' for example are all favourites of mine.

The author does introduce difficult concepts such as the loss of friends due to death which he handles in a gentle and sensitive way.The animals show courage and friendship, by always helping each other and finding a way out of their troubles. Narrated (very well) by Paul Whitehouse, a well know British comedian, this book is well worth a listen. He wishes Vixen to be his mate, but she only agrees to accompany him as he looks for his friends, although she tells him she will consider becoming his mate along the way.

Led by Fox, and guided by Toad, the animals left Farthing Wood on a journey to White Deer Park, a nature reserve where they would be protected. This is perhaps a book for older children, being a bit longer (320 pages) and covering some darker topics (death, hunting etc). A period of intense adventure and action would be followed by one of peace and tranquility and so on, creating interest and enjoyment.She is last seen at the end of the episode watching her mate walk off to explore the new part of the park with Trey.
