Peter William Atkins FRSC (born 10 August 1940) is an English chemist and a Fellow of Lincoln College at the University of Oxford. It was observed that substituents strengthen the intramolecular parallel displaced aromatic π∙∙∙π interaction in some methoxy and formyl substituted 1,8-diphenylnaphthalenes, emphasizing the role of dispersion forces on this type of interactions. He has written and spoken on issues of humanism, atheism, and conflicts between science and religion. The Knudsen/Quartz crystal effusion technique was employed for the measurement of vapour pressures as a function of temperature, and derivation of standard molar enthalpies, entropies and Gibbs energies of sublimation, at T = 298.
