Description

Politicians, intelligence officers, foreign governments and their agents all play key roles as characters in the book, all of whom are depicted wonderfully. This time Patterson delivered an enjoyable political thriller that should keep your attention from the beginning to the end. President Barrett has cleverly dissolved all checks and balances: His vice president is lingering in a mysterious coma, the speaker of the House is swamped in a fresh scandal, and the nomination for the director of the CIA is being held up in the Senate. Every new James Patterson book claims to be the author's "best thriller in years," although depending on the coauthor, his works seldom rise above average.

This can be an effective storytelling device, but in this case, waiting for the private investigator heroine to get to where the reader is at the beginning of the story feels interminable. The plot of a president focusing on their own greatness and willing to put the country in harm to portray himself as “great” really hit home to me in our current political climate (and I hate politics! Still, the blowback must begin, or President Barrett will keep holding power and push the US into a war with two enemies who will stop at nothing to destroy the Land of the Free, given the chance. Shuttling back and forth to reveal a constantly widening panorama, Patterson and DuBois focus on deputy CIA director Hannah Abrams’ stalled nomination as director, inoffensive finance officer Donna Otterson’s suicide when she’s arrested for passing CIA secrets to the Chinese, and the mysterious poisoning that’s sent Vice President Laura Hernandez into a coma. If at least 150 pages of unnecessary dialogue had been cut from Blowback, the novel may have been much better. I love the short chapters but it gets me every time I think I’ll just read one more and next thing you know I have been up for hours.

The authors offer nothing new, but they throw in some historical anecdotes of interest, deliver tense action scenes, and tie up all the loose ends. For me, the best part of “Blowback” was the plotting and how the characters connected to the overall story. The situation is ideal for a paranoid leader hearing voices urging him to fulfill his messianic destiny. Eventually, the two begin to have doubts about what they’re doing, and it becomes clear that Keegan is becoming more and more delusional. Unless they can find a way to outsmart the psycho in the oval office before the blowback destroys the country. A former American president turns action hero in Clinton and Patterson’s disappointing follow-up to their bestselling The President Is Missing.
