However, the Encyclopedia of the Medieval Chronicle lists some 2,500 items written between 300 and 1500 AD. Partly because of the chaotic personnel policy with more than 50 ex-band members (including Lemmy from Motörhead) apply the albums from the early 1970s, recorded with a somewhat stable line-up, as their best.

Hawkwind stalwart Dave Brock obviously did because he based at least 2 Hawkwind albums and lots of other bits and pieces on the works of author Michael Moorcock, especially the Elric saga. The multiverse is made up of an infinite number of parallel realms over which the petty Lords of Chaos and condescending Lords of Law play an eternal game of dominion using mortals and lesser demi-gods as their pawns.

The double album, originally released in 1986, was a recorded document of the band’s “Chronicle of the Black Sword” stage show of 1985, based on the Elric series of novels by Michael Moorcock. The pumping crescendos of ‘Song of the Swords’ and ‘Sea King’ are veiled by a muddy and incoherent mix and the potentially destructive ‘Angels of Death’ has had its incisors well and truly extracted.

Because of the immediacy of the information, historians tend to value live chronicles, such as annals, over dead ones. Atomhenge, the home of Hawkwind’s catalogue from 1976 – 1997, continue their series of definitive re- issued editions of these classic albums with the release of ‘Live Chronicles’. Some are written from the chronicler's direct knowledge, others from witnesses or participants in events, still others are accounts passed down from generation to generation by oral tradition. Release comes in a Fatbox with a collector's reprint of Michael Moorcock's "The Dreaming City", plus four unreleased tracks. The double album, originally released in 1986, was a recorded document of the band’s ‘Chronicle Of The Black Sword’ stage show of 1985, based on the Elric series of novels by Michael Moorcock. The original album lacked "Assault and Battery" and "Sleep of a Thousand Tears" as they had been licensed to Flicknife for single B-sides, and the Michael Moorcock spoken pieces due to Moorcock being in dispute with GWR owner Smith. For die-hard Hawkwind fans this is pretty much an essential purchase but even if you don’t naturally partake of this style of music it’s worth a play (preferably at a very high volume while in an enhanced state of mind) just to see if the deranged energy gets you going. Former manager Douglas Smith had set-up GWR Records for releasing albums by his roster of bands, significantly Motörhead. A live chronicle is where one or more authors add to a chronicle in a regular fashion, recording contemporary events shortly after they occur.

The copyright in this sound recording rests exclusively with Cherry Red Records Group for the World.Unconsciously formed Hawkwind the link between the hippie culture of the 1960s and the punk movement of the 1970s. It is well known that history, in the form of Chronicles, was a favourite portion of the literature of the middle ages. The overblown theatrics are naturally rather cheesy, the subject matter needs to be approached with a healthy dose of irony and the trademark Hawkwind sonic attack isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Before the development of modern journalism and the systematization of chronicles as a journalistic genre, cronista were tasked with narrating chronological events considered worthy of remembrance that were recorded year by year. The earliest medieval chronicle to combine both retrospective ( dead) and contemporary ( live) entries, is the Chronicle of Ireland, which spans the years 431 to 911.
