About this deal

I say it every time I review one of the books in this series by David Baldacci, but I love Amos Decker. A suited Decker, usually comfortable only in jeans or wrinkled khakis and a loose sweatshirt, stared down at the eternal berth-to-be in the ground. His old boss at the FBI, Ross Bogart, had retired and was learning to play golf—badly, he had heard—in Arizona.

The disease had spiraled continually downward, as her brain deteriorated and dragged the rest of her along with it. The flowers he had laid here on his last visit had long since disintegrated, much like the bodies lying below.

It was a bit left-field inclusion, but I guess has implications for Decker as his former partner takes her life because her memory is failing her and she knows that Decker has his own memory-related baggage in that particular luggage compartment. A single shot, which he believed—because he knew Lancaster—had been delivered with deliberate care and competent accuracy. The way Baldacci so easily describes scenes, events and characters and builds up to the climax makes him a real thriller master.

Fans of Baldacci’s 'memory man'character will be highly satisfied with Long Shadowsand anxiously await the next installment in the series. He was to come to the Washington Field Office immediately, or so commanded his superior at the Bureau. The gunshot had been fired upward through the mouth, leaving Mary Lancaster beyond the magic of the mortician’s cosmetics, and thus unviewable. He put his suitcase down inside the door of his apartment, and tore open the letter with his thick finger. Sandy suddenly caught sight of Decker, broke free from her startled father’s grip, and ran over to him.Decker straightened up and eyed the window, where the city lights winked lazily at him in the darkness. Because this is the latest book in a series, his character has already been fine tuned and that makes it for us, readers, a great character. As potential witnesses start disappearing, Decker and White are inexorably pulled down a twisted tunnel of secrets, crimes, and scandal—at the end of which lies Decker’s deadliest threat yet. Meanwhile, Decker must contend with a series of unsettling changes, including a new partner—Special Agent Frederica “Freddie” White—and a devastating event that brings Decker’s own tragic past back to the present . Here his regular partner (Alex) is away again and I wonder at Baldacci’s relationship with Alex Jamison – the character he created – as he partners Decker with others often.
