Snow Patrol had plugged away to little avail for several years before 'Run', a grandiose lighters-in-the-air anthem in the vein of 'Yellow' [. As of July 2020, Parachutes has sold 31,922 copies on cassette in UK, making it the 33rd best-selling cassette since 2000. Which makes me think the Pretty Things could have been pretty big here in the states had it not been for drug busts. Coldplay have also been marking two decades since the release of their debut by sharing throwback videos and images from the vaults.

The album was dedicated to drummer Will Champion's mother, Sara Champion, who died of cancer in May 2000, two months before the release of Parachutes. Melody Maker hailed Parachutes as a "masterpiece" and "a defining musical statement of 2000", while James Oldham of Uncut felt that the album "more than justifies the plaudits heaped upon [the band] by the weekly music press". Stick to the CD if you must own this album, which, on the whole, I think is average and not a patch on their follow-up.Parachutes: an almost identical release (probably a reissue or a reprint) with the same copyright owners and runouts, the only difference being the labels that are "flat" and do not have the two concentric indented circles but, instead, only one circle. The popularity of the songs in British clubs, pubs and sporting events led Parachutes to debut at number-one in the UK Albums Chart with 70,935 copies sold. The album was issued on 10 July 2000 (20 years ago yesterday) and features the top ten hits ‘Yellow’ and ‘Trouble’.

Siobhan Grogan of NME stated that "all told, it's incredible this is a debut album" and concluded that "accomplished, yet subtle, it works perfectly as a whole in a way all the production skills in the world couldn't replicate.

Martin adds newfound meaning to the most tired and overused rock sentiments - love found, love lost, love unrequited - over acoustic guitars and emotionally fraught rock. There's heavy sibilance on "Spies" in all the versions, so maybe that's just how Chris Martin sang it. No surface noise at all, but it's the first record I've bought that I noticed sounded "bad" - flat, lacking depth and dynamics, and very notable sibilance - especially on the quiet parts of "Spies.
