About this deal

The potential for a book that I would love was there, but the character execution just didn’t work for me personally. The only good thing about this book--barring the opportunity to explore Adam's PTSD--was the incorporation of historical events. Belle is also my favorite Disney princess so I am was extremely hopeful and excited, because this isn't just one of the million retellings out in the wild, it's a what happens next with Disney's stamp of approval since they helped publish this.

It's a little tense since Belle wants nothing to do with her title but I don't think Lio really cares either.Belle was back across the Seine when she glanced at the front page and realized it was a political pamphlet, not unlike the ones she had hoarded back in Aveyon, written by the likes ofJean-Jacques Rousseau, Émilie du Châtelet, Olympe de Gouges, and Nicolas de Condorcet. It felt like someone had taken the ended script, the part after the wedding, and printed it in a book.

I mean if she would acknowledge her lack of support at the end, then maybe I would be singing a different tune but she doesn't really. This doesn't mean that you think its flawless (because then what would the point of adaptation actually be) but retellings/adaptations should always be a labor of love. A long lost cousin, having forgotten entirely about Adam during the curse, Bastien is introduced very early on. Because it quickly becomes apparent that the trials of their relationship are far from over even though the curse is broken. She also ignored her (usually correct) instincts and trusted people blindly (which is clearly something you should do when people are actively trying to overthrow you).

And even that was a little contrived in the end, being as surrounded by idiotic side-plots and pointless new characters as it was.

She had spent long nights imagining herself there, attending salons and taking part in lively debates with a more open-minded crowd than she could find in Aveyon. Belle and her father went through a season of lean nights—sometimes sharing only a heel of bread and some watered-down broth—both feeling the pain of losing Belle’s mother more acutely than their hunger pangs. They will be staying with him, which is fortunate for Lio, since as a Duc, Bastien is used to navigating the ins and outs of the royal court. Emma Theriault was born and raised in Ottawa, the capital city of Canada, and thus has a penchant for gothic revival architecture and a constant craving for Beavertails. The only traces left of her upbringing were her confidence and “a perfect over-the-top English accent”, according to fellow student Devaki Jain.

Add in the fact that he spends more time with Belle throughout the course of the novel than Adam ever does and it just gets worse. even though all intrigue was killed by having our protagonist hate him for little to no reason and spoil the reveal.I don't understand why Belle didn't want to be queen and, at the same time, since this is so much about the French revolution, I didn't understand why she didn't ever think "hey, maybe there shouldn't be queens! This takes place during the time of the French Revolution and the author did a great job of weaving that event and this story together. Celebrating the [REDACTED] with members of Europe’s aristocracy did not feel like a step toward protecting her kingdom.
