It's the poetic nature of 'Soul Asylum', the mischievous descriptions of the 'Fire Woman' or the sense of realistic American lifestyles in 'New York City' that really show Ian Astbury and Co. Later on, they tracked a new demo version of the record (15 songs) with Chris Taylor (drummer for the Bob Rock band). Taylor’s Version) [From The Vault] Now That We Don’t Talk (Taylor’s Version) [From The Vault] “Slut! This aspect of The Cult's performance has rarely let down the band's most devoted fans, yet it is partly the cause of 'Sonic Temple' being as timeless as it is. The guitar work is groovy and the other instruments generally follow on as best as they can, but with the album running at almost an hour in length, one can't help but feel if 'Automatic Blues' was purely added as a filler.

Secondly, this is a gatefold with no lyrics or inserts, yet Ceremony is not a gatefold and comes with lyric inserts…why? I don’t know how I’ll get this dirt off the surface yet because nothing seems to work, there’s just so much of it. The album received mixed reviews, with some interpreting the change in sound positively and some negatively. However, 'Sonic Temple' is not all about Billy Duffy and his beloved instrument, as the album cover misleadingly suggests. The Cults best album and one of my favorite all time LPs, together with GNRs Appetite for Destruction they are both peak 80s rock before grunge arrived and took over. Electric' opted for a bigger, 'ballsier' and perhaps better sound than found within the sometimes melodic passages of 'Love'. Originally released in 1989, Sonic Temple proved to be a pivotal moment for both band and the wider rock scene. It is beautifully packaged in book form with rare photographs and interviews with the band by esteemed journalist James Brown.

It’s numbered and limited to 3500 pieces worldwide and contains 40 tracks, four of which are previously unreleased. Sun King as mentioned above is some of the best fusion songs, Edie is their signature ballad and there is place for diversity with the rocking New York City, the anthemic Wake Up Time for Freedom, the groove of Sweet Soul Sister, or the slow post-punk-ish construction of American Horse.Softer numbers such as the solemn yet perhaps too-long-for-its-own-good 'Soul Asylum' and unreleased bonus track 'The River' show Duffy's more melodic side to his own talent, rather than aiming purely for a rock vibe. The Cult‘s 1989 album Sonic Temple is getting the 30th reissue treatment in September with a series of expanded physical sets.

The box is a two piece, lift-off lid type and has a foam inner tray with recess areas for the cassette and backstage pass. It does not compare favourably with 'Love' nor 'Electric' but "American Horse" and "Sweet Soul Sister" in particular are great heavy rock tracks. Butthe long and tortuous road that had brought the Cult this widespread acceptance was bound to claim its bounty. The genre mostly died in the 90s, save a few exceptions, leaving a huge gap between more mainstream rock and the ever evolving metal genres. Vocalist Ian Astbury, guitarist Billy Duffy and bassist Jamie Stewart weren’t about to chase their muse down another exotic rabbit hole.

LP3 contains Live At Wembley recorded by the BBC, and the included cassette contains limited-release demos.
