About this deal

Eight miles below the surface of the ocean, a small team of scientists are working feverishly to harness the properties of a substance that has been discovered on the ocean floor that just may save the world from a plague of staggering proportions. He conducts survivalism-oriented, days-long scouting expeditions each year with a troop of boys into the Canadian wilderness. Luke's defining characteristic is that his five year old son disappeared in a park years ago and Luke has never recovered from that. tldr version: the book tries to hold too many cards in its hands, fumbles them while trying to play them, sends them flying all over the place. The book has been favorably compared to Stephen King's Carrie for its use of "extratextual materials, including newspaper articles, interviews and the like, to supplement the narrative", which Davidson has cited as an inspiration.

Little things at first, like where you left your keys, but trust me, things get so much worse quickly until soon you forget to eat and your heart forgets to pump. I literally felt as if I was down there, miles deep into the ocean with all sorts of claustrophobia sinking in. Granted, the setting and atmosphere for The Deep is a million times more frightening and effective than The Troop‘s island. The book jacket acknowledges that The Deep borrows from The Abyss and The Shining, and others have noted it all uses elements of The Thing and Aliens. But now the station is incommunicado, and it's up to a brave few to descend through the lightless fathoms in hopes of unraveling the mysteries lurking at those crushing depths . That is, there’s no cure in sight until one of the world’s most brilliant scientists, Clayton Nelson, makes an impossible discovery from the ocean’s depths.

Luke tells his son that monsters are just figments of his imagination, but Zach misunderstands and thinks that there are Fig Men lurking in his bedroom. Sure, it primarily takes place in the bottommost recess of the Pacific, but it also involves familial alienation, societal islands, and a few of man’s best friends being used for biological experiments. Abducted by the Fig Men and brought down to their world, where he's slowly been changed into a Humanoid Abomination. Unfortunately, the deep-sea station goes silent, then begins sending up strange garbled communications.Mind you, I’m not even scared of the ocean or anything but I will think twice before ever going on a deep sea voyage after reading this novel.
