Description

The Visitors Book is a story about Victoria and her strange partner Aaron who get into a huge row when she refuses to sign the visitors' book at his London flat. she has a lovely knack of hinting and alluding to goings-on elsewhere (the best kind of narration, imho). Since he was their confidant and inherited Dicky and Denis’s personal archives, Lys Turner provides several nuggets of this kind, in particular extracts from the numerous letters that Francis sent to Denis and a variety of hitherto unseen photographs (although I have to say the photos published here of Francis’s boyfriend, George Dyer, don’t look much like the Dyer I knew). What will remain with me is the beautiful writing, the passages set in Egypt at night in silence as Lucy reflects on death and loss, the subtle connections between the treasures of Tut's tomb and the possessions that Lucy accumulates throughout her long life; the exquisitely detailed setting of 1920s Egypt.

Another book taking place during the unrecorded year, Tomoko Jones is revived to become the consort of the fearsome Fieh Chan, Visitor Commander of Tokyo. If you like the genre, and want to pass at most a couple of hours with a quick easy read, then perhaps you might enjoy this book. Series creator Kenneth Johnson has said that the story was inspired by the 1935 novel It Can't Happen Here by Sinclair Lewis. In the 1983 V miniseries, a group of children are shown spray painting generic graffiti over the Visitors' propaganda posters, but are then shown how to spray the V over the posters by Abraham Bernstein, a Holocaust survivor, who explains the meaning of the sign to them as he defaces the first poster. Siberia”, a short story by Jessi Jezewska Stevens, was published in Harper’s Magazine and is available to read here. Hannah is a British author best known for her psychological thrillers, and while I love the genre, I’m not familiar with her earlier work.

The Visitors (novel) - Wikipedia

Replaying recent history through a distorting glass, The Visitors is a mordantly funny tour through a world where not only civic infrastructure but our darkest desires (not to mention our novels) are vulnerable to malware; where mythical creatures talk like Don DeLillo; where love is little more than a blip in our metadata. A Visitor experiment in breeding, if successful, will ravage the Eastern Coast Seaboards (causing serious environmental consequences). Intrigue is added by the fact that in 1922 the first stirrings of national pride and independence are wafting through Egyptian society. The cover of the 18th issue did state "Final Issue", but actually featured (with issue 17) a flashback story featuring Elias Taylor. And do the answers to all of C’s questions lie with an eco-hacktivist cabal threatening to end modern life as we know it? Sent abroad to Egypt in 1922 to recover from the typhoid that killed her mother, eleven-year-old Lucy is caught up in the intrigue and excitement that surrounds the obsessive hunt for Tutankhamun's tomb.
