Vestal Kaszebe is made with potatoes harvested in the Kaszebe region in northern Poland, which is known for having rather sandy soil. This is the 2009 vintage Vestal Kaszebe, produced in Poland with Vineta potatoes grown in the Kaszebe region using a single distillation.

They also rest the liquid in stainless steel open casks, which adds a surprisingly subtle but natural sweetness. A potato vodka base with a smooth, soft body, it has a smokey nose with a disarmingly light chilli prickle behind it. It's currently buried deep at the back of the nuclear bunker which comprises our warehouse, and nobody quite remembers the code to shut off the killer robots guarding that part of the complex, so please give us an extra day or two to ship this to you.

A densely fruity flavoured vodka here from the Vestal range, packed to the brim with black cherry decadence. The aromas are of creamy vanilla with light hints of cinnamon and jasmine, which carry through to the drinking on a lightly sweet base with murmurs of crisp apple and camomile. A great gift for cocktail lovers (this would add instant oomph to a passion fruit martini) or students. Alongside the familiar big vodka brands such as Smirnoff, Absolut and Ciroc are smaller artisan producers getting creative with new bottles.

The crisp green apple flavours come through first, with their tart notes balanced by warming spice from ginger. Borrell, who actually started the company with his father and initially sold the product in London’s farmer’s markets, gave us three expressions to try: The core Polish Potato Vodka, a Black Cherry version and an Unfiltered 2015 Vintage (again, pretty rare for a vodka to have a year statement). He also offers some good-natured sarcasm: “As for distillation — there’s a famous Swedish company that I won’t name. There are two ways to make potato vodka — real potato vodka, which is a dying breed, or the other, which utilizes potato chippings in a mash, or even a powdered starch that falls off the potato to make a type of potato ethanol,” says Borrell, who grew to love vodka after spending his teen and early adult summers in Poland with his father, a former Time war correspondent.Moorland Spirit Co hails from a remote corner of Northumberland and counts noted foodie Valentine Warner among its founders. Somewhat surprisingly, the essential element here is of blueberries, namely blueberry muffins, with a slightly cake-y edge on the fruit. Orange marmalade, orange zest, a bit of juice and more sweet marmalade assail you in the most glorious manner.

Not painfully spicy, but definitely warming – and an obvious contender for bloody marys or bull shots. For example, try vanilla vodka in a French martini or use fragrant vanilla vodka in a tropical Waterloo sunset cocktail.Its subtle versatility makes it perfect for cocktail: it is most classic in a passion fruit martini. But you’ll get something closer to herbaceous mezcal on the palate, albeit one with a creamy mouthfeel and some hints of white pepper and nutmeg.

To find the best flavoured vodka, we tested each one neat, before mixing with soda and lemonade, to experience the different flavour profiles.Vestal grow the potatoes they use to make their vodka in the fertile soil of the Kaszebe and Podlasie regions of Poland (our terroirs), and they harvest them young to preserve their distinctive flavour. Flavoured vodka offers a chance for artisans to get creative – we’ve tried everything from spicy chilli vodka to smooth strawberry or subtle elderflower. These are pressed and infused into the vodka for four days to impart their flavour (and gentle pink-orange hue) and the berry flavour bursts through the finished drink. Vestal greatly value the aromas and flavours from the vodka, and this is clearly evident from the first nosing to the last sip.
