Living in a world where women are only meant to marry and bear children, she's had a lot to deal with in her life. I mumbled, shifting my hips to try to rub his hand against the dirt beneath our bodies until he had no choice but to remove it. And the love interest was a way darker and twisted version of the love interest in the Blood and Ash series.

Though on my second read though I did come across someone saying that another person had "eerie mismatched eyes" as a negative trait. the love interest started becoming two-dimensional to me with his overprotectiveness in the last quarter of the novel.Even with his cloak still wrapped around my shoulders, he didn’t seem bothered by the cold dirt beneath him. If you (like me) were drawn to this book because of all the great one liners people have been posting on BookTok, I wouldn’t say NOT to read it. They were filled all the creatures we wouldn’t ever have to see with the Veil to protect us, so long as I learned to leave it alone. Human or vampire, the rules of survival are the same: never trust, never yield, and always – always – guard your heart.

This book starts off in the human realm, where our main character is going to be sacrificed to keep up the Veil—a magical boundary separating themselves from the fae. It stripped all the good parts of from blood and ash, an ember in the shadow, A court of thrones and roses and made just an absolute mess of a book. I really hope the author takes advantage of the world she introduced and expands it for the reader, this is what I'm looking forward to the most in the sequel. He dropped his hand to the Mark on my neck, the swirling and writhing ink of his skin brushing against mine and causing a shock to roll through me. Speaks volumes to me that the divide between heaven and earth is not to be seen by man as real but its pure perception. So the one that recommended this book, said that the world building was seamless and not complicated at all. I’ve always thought of life as a metaphor whose interpretation depends on one’s moral and spiritual beliefs.

I loved how the heroine rationalized away all the "coincidences" about the hero and any indication of something being slightly off about him. I have to say thus far your words and explanations have made the most sense to me of any I have ever found and I feel some sort of connection here. Caelum: “Tonight, when we’re in bed and I’ve got my cock between your legs again, they’ll be lying in their bed, jerking their cocks to the memory of me fucking you.I saw the plot-twist coming and while it was predictable but it made me excited for what will happen in the sequel. We have the fated mates trope, which is a common concept we encounter in fae books and I've grown to expect it in these books, and here the mates are marked. In the beginning it's mentioned that a guard had taught her a few moves to defend herself and then later in the book miss ma'am turns into an experienced fighter taking two grown men down without any proper training. Solid fantasy read with fae/human mates, inter-species war, witches, gods, and a violent FMC threatening to stab the love interest several times per chapter. By the end of book one, we have some background about the history before the Veil, but most of it is told from the human's perspective, so I'm curious to learn about it acording to the Fae.

I understood at that moment that he didn’t want to watch the life fade from my eyes as he slit my throat—that he took no pleasure in doing the will of The Father. If you’re looking for an interesting read that keeps you on the edge of your seat, this one is for you. I've spent my entire life tending to the gardens next to the boundary between our worlds, drawn to the shimmering magic like a moth to the flame. Both Estrella and Caelum got on my nerves sometimes for different reasons, but they were ultimately likeable for different reasons.

Another tragedy staggers her and now the only person she has to rely on is one of the runners himself. She would say she trusted Caelum with her life, but put a knife to his throat in self defense a scene later. The FMC here tried to be as violent and stubby as Poppy is, bit she didn't manage it because it was written oh so poorly. With my life on the line, he is everything I shouldn't dare to want and a distraction I can't afford. I am told my union to the crowned prince will determine the fate of the kingdom, but it isn’t my betrothed who haunts my dreams.
