We got this for our 7 year old daughter. I grew up playing with playmobile toys when I was growing up. I am not sure why there are not more popular in the States, but they are all the rage in europe. They have really put a lot of detail into which items are included to allow kids to play freely and use their imagination, but also include all that is needed for a realistic play depending on what your child prefers. They have little food containers and even tiny veterinarian equipment to a small wristwatch to put around the veterinarian character.

We also have playmobile animal sets as well as a big doll house and our 7 year old spends hours planning out stories and playing with her little family. And honestly as a parent there is no bigger praise to a toy if your kid just spends hours playing with it, without realizing how much time they spend on it.
