Yet Judith Miller’s long and illustrious career in the world of antiques publishing had little to do with her family background. We want our comments to be a lively and valuable part of our community - a place where readers can debate and engage with the most important local issues. There are connections to Yorkshire too including Burmantofts Faience Pottery from Leeds; Studio potter Joanna Constantindis, from York; Studio glass artist, Peter Layton, from Yorkshire as well as pieces from York in silver and sewing; some sporting and military pieces from the county and a teddy elephant which previously belonged to relations of the Ingilby baronets of Ripley Castle, North Yorkshire. Janet Gleeson worked at Sotheby’s and Bonhams as a picture specialist before joining Miller’s Guides as an editor. I was doing up a house and felt it was really difficult to find out what cornices would have looked like in a house of this period.

It also serves as a guide on how to appraise everything from books and ceramics to toys and vintage fashion. He was also married, but he left his wife and daughters for his blonde, bright assistant; they married in 1978, and went on to have two daughters. The plates were often broken, but they were a catalyst, inspiring Judith to visit the library to learn more about her finds.

In-depth features explaining how to value and become an expert along with biographies of designers and factories provide essential background information to help date and value objects. Over the years those who are keen to get rid of their clutter could literally be counting the costs having potentially thrown away a fortune disposing of memorabilia they perhaps thought wasn’t worth keeping. These adverts enable local businesses to get in front of their target audience – the local community. Among her other obsessions she numbered dogs, Scottish rugby and – above all – Bruce Springsteen: she travelled the world to see The Boss live.

To start with I said I was too busy to join the show, but as soon as I did one I wanted to do them all! Judith’s friends looked on, totally bewildered, when she got excited about 18th-century plates, and decorated her flat with piles of ceramics. The series made the couple a fortune – Martin Miller was nicknamed “the Richard Branson of the antiques world” – and spawned an empire of other standalone Miller guides, to porcelain, silver, Victoriana, and so on. After staying on at Edinburgh to do a master’s in History, Judith was hired in 1974 as an assistant – at twice the going rate – by Martin Miller, who was living in a period of semi-retirement in a Victorian Gothic castle outside Galashiels.
