Now, audio producers Big Finish have now confirmed details of the second release too. Here’s the synopsis for ‘The Artist at the End of Time’: Big Finish’s Doctor Who 60 th anniversary series continues with Once and Future: Time Lord Immemorial .

Of course, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann and David Tennant all reunited already this year for ‘ The Power of The Doctor’, but it will be the first time Christopher Eccleston has joined them, or returned to the Whoniverse since his audio series The Ninth Doctor Adventures launched in 2021. It’s also Tom Baker’s first return to Doctor Who since he appeared in a rewritten story, ‘Return of the Cybermen’, for the Big Finish series Doctor Who Lost Stories last year. Oh, and there’s biscuit based surprise right at the end of the trailer which is really worth hanging on for!Once and Future also attempts to balance the individual story while connecting to the larger story, which is totally typical for many series and stories. However, with the tight run time of just under an hour, and will no visuals to help facilitate the story, it felt difficult to fully appreciate both the microsphere of the individual story and the microsphere of the larger picture of Once and Future. I think the series will be even more enjoyable after all parts are out and I can binge-listen to them. Additionally, there’s a reunion for Susan (Carole Ann Ford) and River Song (Alex Kingston), who first met in one of River’s audio adventures (albeit with Susan played by Claudia Grant from An Adventure in Space and Time.) Time Lord Immemorial’ follows on directly from the plot thread left dangling; the Ninth Doctor follows up on the clue thrown to him by Missy in ‘The Martian Invasion of Planetoid 50’, seeking “The Union” – a planet rich in psionic sand. With two releases in the month of October, the main narrative of Big Finish’s Doctor Who: Once and Future draws to a close (save for a Coda due in November 2024.)

Big Finish begin their audio celebration of Doctor Who’s 60 th anniversary with Once and Future: Past Lives, a Tom Baker led tale that involves the Meddling Monk and modern-day UNIT. Meanwhile, a Time Lord renegade has duped Harry Sullivan into helping him stop the Doctor’s travels before they begin – and all are set on a collision course.

Script editor Matt Fitton said: “With these 60th anniversary stories, it was great to work out what the shopping list of characters would be, who we’d throw into the mix, how they’d bounce off each other and who would work well together.

The Time War. The Doctor has been injured and brought to a Time Lord field hospital. His body glows with energy, but this is no regeneration into a future form - instead, the Doctor's past faces begin to appear as he flits haphazardly between incarnations... The Time War. The Doctor has been injured and brought to a Time Lord field hospital. His body glows with energy, but this is no regeneration into a future form - instead, the Doctor’s past faces begin to appear as he flits haphazardly between incarnations… This story comes from writer Matt Fitton, who has script-edited the series, and will hopefully provide answers to the Doctor’s predicament. It also serves as a family reunion, as the Doctor shares the adventure with both his granddaughter Susan (Carole Ann Ford) and his future wife, River Song (Alex Kingston).

Sylvester McCoy and I have worked together many times in the past. We have known each other for a long time, way before Doctor Who. It’s always great fun to get together with him again.” After episodes which have taken the degenerating Doctor on some tangents, he’s focussed on seeking a cure for his condition. In the trailer, we hear him (as the Sixth Doctor) catching up with former companion and UNIT medic Harry Sullivan. We now also know the full cast list, with Abi Harris playing the Roboguide, John Telfer and Toom, and Messrs Baker (Colin), Noonan, McCoy, Treloar and Troughton (Michael) as their respective Doctors. We may be getting closer to the conclusion of the eight-part story arc but, later this month, the Eighth Doctor (Paul McGann), Susan (Carole Ann Ford), River Song (Alex Kingston), and, once again, the Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker) will get to the bottom of the degeneration crisis in The Union…

Script editor Matt Fitton has spoken about the heady mix of characters for this fourth chapter of Once and Future: Former Hartnell-era companion actor Maureen O’Brien voices the mini-series’ big bad The Union and it sounds like she’s having a blast! The final – or perhaps penultimate – chapter of Big Finish’s Doctor Who 60th anniversary event brings Once and Future to an epic climax, with the Eighth (Paul McGann) and Fourth (Tom Baker) Doctors reuniting with their granddaughter Susan (Carole Ann Ford) and future wife Professor River Song (Alex Kingston) against the Union (the titular character voiced by Maureen O’Brien). One Classic era companion, one New Series era companion: a magnificent combination! With a terrific score, and despite seemingly adding nothing to the overall storyline, ‘A Genius for War’ is the strongest Once and Future tale so far. It also deposits Davros in an interesting place, which we’d love to be the focus of a further story. Special Edition We find the Doctor in the most chaotic situation imaginable. He’s been blasted by some sort of degeneration weapon. Meanwhile, the Meddling Monk has a price on his head, Sarah Jane Smith gets kidnapped, and Kate Stewart and Osgood are being menaced by a belligerent alien race with plans to relive their glory days. So, for them, and for me, the joyous bit is the intellectual chess game they play with each other, as to who’s going to win, rather than the bangs and the whistles. At the end of it, it’s all about the battle of minds. The bonus artworks are specially-commissioned B-movie style poster artworks by Oliver Arkinstall-Jones to illustrate each of the stories in Doctor Who: Once and Future. Additionally, the cover for standard edition of ‘The Artist at the End of Time’ has been revised, although the Special Edition version remains the same. However, before he gets much further – even before the credits roll – he finds David Warner’s alternate Doctor materialising in his TARDIS. Or rather, from the alternate Doctor’s point of view, the Ninth Doctor has materialised in his. Regardless, neither are best pleased about the fact!
