Description

All of the characters have their own insecurities, their own ‘issues’ and they use an internet chat room to blow off some steam and express their thoughts of the world. A great play nonetheless which is difficult to actually enjoy because of the nature of it, but Enda highlights the dangers of conformity and what can happen if a joke is taken too far. Regardless I think there is some really deep and interesting subject matter in this play and I am looking forward to re-reading as I use it for a school project.

Disclaimer/Trigger warning: This production contains adult themes and language from the very start, as well as references to suicide, depression and family trauma. We are continuing to work hard in the background and are still accepting submissions which will be complete in Autumn 2023. A very important message which is current and will be relevant for the duration of this technology-driven age. But when a new member joins to share his depression and thoughts of suicide, the conversation takes a darker turn.

COVID 19: This production has been produced in line with current government guidelines regarding COVID 19. Whether that's putting new work on stages across the world or supporting our outreach and learning programmes, every purchase you make really does make a difference.

His plans are halted though when his computer and phone are taken away from him by his father, who when looking through William's computer, finds one of the suicide videos. Mo and the others discover about William's intended actions and go to stop him, meeting up in person and trying to follow William and Jim around London. A very thought provoking play, although I think I am going to have to either read the ending again or watch a staged version of it to fully understand. A group of keyboard warriors- nameless, faceless and masked by a computer screen find comfort in antagonist William. I am a teacher and my initial plan was to do some of this this with my students (all around 17 years old) but none of them knew what a chat room was.A group of bored and restless teenagers - William, Jack, Eva, Emily and Laura - spend their time deconstructing children's literature and the messages in modern pop music. Undoubtedly, one of my favourite modern plays, Chatroom comments on the all too tangible reality of cyberspace bullying in a visceral, scary and yet somehow humourous way. but it also contains loads of excellent monologues, duologues and short scenes for classwork or exams. In a quiet corner of the internet, a group of bored, restless teenagers spends its time deconstructing children's literature and the messages in modern pop music.

When William gets it and comes back, Eva punches him and the rest of the crew comes, followed by the police.
