Description

The style of writing was poor, I felt, but there are plenty of strong opportunities for role-play and research around the book related to WW2. I can imagine writing this as a play with my class Michael's books have been translated into many languages including Chinese, Bulgarian and Hungarian, Hebrew and Japanese. He travels all over the UK and abroad talking to people of all ages at literary festivals, telling his stories and encouraging them to tell theirs. Gentleness with not so gentle dilemas and feelings. Good handling of the conflicting feelings of the main characters. Will be reading this to my Year 4 class in November so we can think of all the people who will be remembering those who died in the war. Friend or Foe is a historical fiction novel about World War II, that grips the reader from the start. This book allows the reader to develop their knowledge and understanding of the second world war, through the description in the book.

An interesting, entertaining and engaging story as usual from Michael Morpurgo - but he is not at his best here.Hello Yellow - 80 Books to Help Children Nurture Good Mental Health and Support With Anxiety and Wellbeing - The Germans are bombing London and every day people are dying in the Blitz. Everyone at school hates the Germans, especially David because they killed his father and caused him to be evacuated from his home in Islington to Devon in the country to live with strangers. So when a German soldier rescues David and asks him for help, he is faced with a dilemma: to help the enemy or not? The novel is set during World War II and follows two evacuees to the West Country. The boys find themselves on a farm. “They were no longer going away, they were arriving.” Life is all about perspective. The boys turned a negative into a positive.

David Wood, chair of Action for Children’s Arts, said Morpurgo is “one of our greatest storytellers”. You might think that a novel of this sort might be boring, but Reid gives us a glimpse of domestic homelife that is sweet and sentimental — giving us something for the characters to work towards restoring, and something for the reader to pin his or her hopes on. You do want Junior and Hen to kiss and make up, you do want Junior to have a fun time in space, and even you do hope that Terrance, as creepy and calculating as he is, gets to complete his mission of transformation and reconciliation of the couple. That just makes the very ending of the book — not to carp, but its really endings plural — all the more mortifying. After reading Chapters 1-3, write David’s diary entry for the day that he was evacuated. The diary entry should begin by describing waking up at home in the morning and should end with going to bed at Mr Reynolds’ farm. Remember that a diary entry should:
