About this deal

the stakes should be low, the conflict should be mundane (but important to the characters, and by extension, to us), and there should definitely not be multiple near death experiences. It also ends on a little epilogue which promises new as well as our main characters, and surely more shenanigans.

But after an assassin takes Reyna hostage, she decides she’s thoroughly done risking her life for a self-centered queen. So wrap yourself up in a blanket, grab a very relevant cup of tea, and let yourself fall into a daydream full of magic, love, puns, adventure, and the promise of a life worth living. And hey, I KNOW this is the first in a series, so some of the plot stuff is left hanging intentionally, but I was definitely disappointed that the story arc I was most invested in -- the dragon mystery! Many plot points seemed implausibly convenient and the dialogue was a times uncomfortably cringy and the story overall was also a little too tense and plot-driven for a cozy fantasy. Thing is, Reyna works as one of the Queen’s private guards, and Kianthe is the most powerful mage in existence.

I felt like I understood what I needed to understand about the countries, rulers, different cultures, magic etc. Aside from the decision Reyna makes at the beginning to leave the queen, this is a story where the plot happens to the characters. Kianthe and Reyna are such characters, and their interactions are full of wholesome love (and terrible puns) and I love every second of it. i get that the author was setting themselves up for a second book in the series, but that meant that there was barely any story arc to this one.

But it's certainly a sweet and quick read, though one that requires a good cup of tea (and maybe a sweet treat to pair it with! They're filled with so much love, tenderness, and care for one another and are actively communicating through conflicts and roadblocks to be better partners for each other. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. The setting is solid, the romance feels real, and the magic system with its mystical creatures are filled with whimsy and familiarity. After reading Legends and Lattes, I was 'introduced' to the cozy fantasy notion and I couldn't be more pleased about it. What follows is a tale of mishaps, mysteries, dragons, and a murderous queen throwing the realm’s biggest temper tantrum. This series was intended to show that it’s always possible to create lives of romance and quiet comfort, even in a chaotic world.

We can have high stakes, all the makings and adventure of a traditional high fantasy, and still be cozy. I wish I could have a whole novel of all the character moments, shenanigans, and romance without the deadly serious world-ending adventure storyline getting in the way”? It often doesn't resolve their issues either, as neither are actually good communicators who talk properly through their problems, and Kianthe in particular is riddled with personal issues which she refuses to convey to Reyna, despite insisting her girlfriend must share all her issues, and it only causes problems for the two of them.

side note: I feel slightly uncomfy with the fictionalization of bagels, which is a food that emerged out of antisemitism, and is incredibly important to Jewish culture/history, but it was only a short bit of the story! I loved Legends and Lattes so I was excited to hear all the comparisons people were making about these two books, but, unfortunately for me, they were not similar where is mattered. It’s easy on the brain with a delightful and deeply entertaining cast of characters that form the warmest found family.
