The Wi is intelligent. If, for example, the grinder’s target weight is 20g but only 19.6g are produced, the Wi will self-adjust. On the next grind, it will stop the motor just a little later. This might result in a slight overdose, but not to worry; the Wi keeps learning and within a few grinds will self-adjust so that it repeatedly doses within a few tenths of a gram! This conical burr series debuts a revolutionary new grinding technology. Designed and perfected in Liechtenstein over a period of eight years, this technology sets a new standard in simplicity, efficiency and durability. This new mechanism has the outer burr rotate and the inner burr is fixed, a truly revolutionary design. The design of this mechanism doubles the efficiency of similarly sized grinders. Coffee passes straight through the grinder, vertically, and drops directly into the grounds bin or your portafilter. Also, both grinder works on time grinding; to understand this, suppose you want to pull an espresso shot that requires 8 grams of ground coffee. The Sette has a much more sleek and modern design. It is named “Sette” or seven in Italian because of its unique shape – look at it from the side to see what we mean. Like the Vario, Baratza also offers the 270 Wi, which also includes weight-based dosing. Similarities Compact Footprint

You don’t want to be sending a coffe grinder halfway across the world if you face a problem and be left without an espresso grinder for your morning coffee, right? The Sette 270 model is very similar to its bigger brother, the Sette 270Wi. It is a 3.2 kg grinder, not a lightweight one. Has capacity to hold up to 3-400g of coffee beans and it’s largely made of hard plastic. It’s not as sturdy as the more expensive models but the build quality can withstand the test of time. However, compared to many hand grinders and other entry-level espresso grinders, I do think you get good flavors out of the Sette. In addition, shots are rarely astringent, which can be a significant issue with cheaper espresso grinders. Removable power cord. It sounds odd, but I wish more grinders had this feature. If your cord gets damaged it is a standard cord that you can find almost anywhere. It makes it easier if you transport the grinder. I think the main reason I love it is that I would buy a much shorter cord to clean up the counter top. The conic shaped burrs container makes sure that all the coffee grounds will go through both burrs and in the bin or portafilter below. You don’t have to waste coffee by purging old grounds, basically.

For example, in the first button, you can save for Espresso grind time, second for French press and third for Cold Brew. A built-in convertible holder allows you to grind directly into your portafilter, the supplied grounds bin, or most of the popular brewing devices (Hario, Clever, Able Kone, Aeropress) – a standout feature amongst all other home grinders. The Sette 270 grounds bin is made from an anti-static plastic, with a moulded spout for easy pouring into your preferred brewing device. The portaholder can accommodate any size of portafilter and includes an integrated hook for stability. Hopper Someone that already has a dedicated prosumer espresso grinder but is looking for a very solid grinder to grind all other types of grounds as mentioned above such as drip. At the higher price point that the 270 and 270Wi comes in at, you have alternatives, which don’t have any long term issues such as the Eureka Mignon Specialita and the DF64. Both these grinders also feature flat burrs, which many people (including myself) would argue offers superior espresso flavors.

The vertically placed conical burrs allow very precise grinding, especially if you need a fine to extra fine grind size. Espresso and Turkish coffee lovers will find the Baratza Sette 270 a perfect grinder for their needs. A downside of this specialization in fine grinds is that this grinder doesn’t perform as well if you need a coarse grind. This design has a big tradeoff: the Sette is a VERY loud grinder (I’ll explain the noise issue more below). Grind Quality and Consistency The biggest and best upgrades, though, are the stepless micro adjustment, which allow for 270 degrees of fine tuning as opposed to 31, and the three programmable timed dosing presets up from the 30 AP’s one. The Sette 270’s AP burrs can be swapped out with Baratza’s BG burrs; however, the 270’s significant adjustment capabilities makes for reliable swapping between any brew methods in a turn or two. Ready, Sette, let’s grind! There is a micro switch in one of the slots to prevent the grinder from running with the hopper removed. A good safety feature if you were going to poke your fingers inside while trying to run the grinder or clean. FYI, don't poke your fingers into the burrs! Similarly there is another microswitch to prevent the grinder from running if you remove the bottom burr. This design increases grinding speed and efficiency. The 270Wi grinds 50g in 15 seconds, which is very fast compared to a lot of grinders at grams per second. There is low grind retention too. Rotation of the outer ring burr (with twice the surface area of the cone burr) along with proprietary tooth geometry, produces grinding thru-put that is two to three times that of others in its class. All models in the Sette-line are calibrated to grind rather fine, and as such, don’t do well when it comes to methods like the French press or drip. After all, it’s hard to find entry-level grinder espresso grindersthat don’t have some sort of compromise. Beyond that, they are exactly the same the size. Both are 5 inches wide and 9.5 inches deep. They are compact grinders that are excellent for homes with small kitchens or crowded counters. Hopper Size

But the best option I always recommend is to weigh the coffee beans and then put them into the grinder. So, each grind setting has a further 9 micro-adjustments from coarser to finer and represented by alphabets from A to H. With that in mind, it is not surprising that Baratza grinders are highly reputed among coffee experts for their quality, reliability and many features. Some of the very best coffee grinders in the world are produced by this US company. Should you buy Baratza’s tried and true Vario or Baratza’s newest grinder in the lineup – the Sette 270? If you have a larger coffee grinder budget, you’ve likely looked at these two excellent coffee grinders from Baratza. While either grinder would make a good choice for a café or home barista, there are some key differences in build and features. There are some other quite nice details on the grinder. For instance, the oversized grounds bin is made out of a very nice plastic material similar to the latest generation of the AeroPress. There’s just something nice about using it.

The conical burrs on the Baratza Sette 270Wi create consistent, uniform grind size distribution across all of its grind settings. The Sette’s 40mm conical burrs are designed by Etzinger, who specializes in high-performance conical burrs. Etzinger brought their game with the Sette burrs, as the grinder produces very consistent grind sizes. I wouldn’t recommend the 270Wi if you don’t make espresso. The 270Wi has unnecessary features for pour-over or French press. There are more affordable options for those brewers, like the Sette 30 or Fellow Opus. Because of the preceding factors and the small price variation, we find it a draw in the cost category. Durability The Sette is versatile enough to use for pour-over and drip coffee, too. Constant adjustments between espresso and more coarse settings will cause inconsistency, especially in espresso. You can overcome this by purging the grinder between adjustments. Like the rest of the Sette fam, the 270 features durable 40mm steel burrs. In a step up from the 30, the Sette 270’s burrs are housed in stainless steel rather than plastic. Similarly, a stainless handle stops the hopper, allowing it to be removed when swapping between beans.

Now, some of their features are compared by their name only; the Sette 30 has only 30 grind settings, the Sette 270 has 270 grind settings and the Sette 270Wi has 270 grind settings with weight grinding and intelligence. The Sette has a 10-ounce bean hopper, slightly larger than the 8-ounce coffee hopper in the Vario. It isn’t a huge difference, but you’ll have to add coffee beans more frequently in the Vario. The Vario has a large ground coffee bin with a 6-ounce capacity compared to the 5.5-ounce bin in the Sette. The extra space in the Vario dosing container will help when you’re preparing drip coffee. CostWhether you’re looking for a hopper-based grinder or a single-doser, there are some other strong options on the market. The last consideration for all these grinders is price. The price doubles from 30 to 270wi, which is a big jump. All three are excellent grinders, but personally, I would go with the Baratza 270 because the timed basing dosing is perfectly fine and you don’t mind using a scale to measure weight. The hopper holds approximately 275g of coffee. An innovative bean shutoff feature in the collar permits no-mess, no-fuss hopper removal for changing out beans. The Sette’s grounds bin is made from an anti-static plastic, with a molded spout for easy pouring into your preferred brewing device. It has a usable capacity of 160g (Med Roast). ACAIA - (WEIGHT-BASED DOSING) Using a combination planetary gear box and a patented crown gear drive system, we achieve a 19:1 speed reduction. Burrs
