As with the previous book in the sequence, this one tells the story from each side of the conflict, allowing us to explore how Philip and Flaminius saw each other - and their various allies. I’m looking forward to reading more from this fantastic future and will be seeking out his back catalogue of books! What's more we see the other end of the scale, Prince Philip, a charismatic but oftentimes ruthless hero king plagued with concerns for his nation and those around him.

Additionally make sure your User-Agent is not empty and is something unique and descriptive and try again. The stories of the main characters are told within the context of battles described in awe-inspiring detail. There isn't always someone on our side to help us get through the day or to help us through tough times at work or at home, but if we want our teams to be there through thick and thin we have to realize that we're all human. As a result, the Roman characters are the ones that the reader should care about, empathize with, whatever. Through the hard work of Charlie Viney, my amazing agent, I managed to land a book deal in the summer of 2007. As a real animal lover, all I’d ever wanted to be was a veterinarian, so that’s what I put on my university application form. The second in Ben Kane's 'Clash of Empires' series takes the excellent start he made with the first book and dials everything up another notch. Even if I disliked Flamininus and some of the soap-operaish theatrics that went with him, the broader story continued to hold my attention.

Biography: Kenya born, Irish by blood and UK resident, Ben Kane's passion for history has seen him change career from veterinary medicine to writing, and taken him to more than 60 countries, and all 7 continents. For me to enjoy a Historical novel, I have to feel like I have been to the place and time being discussed. These are the Falling Sword runes as chosen by level 70 Crusaders who are currently playing the Diablo III: Reaper of Souls on PC or Mac in patch 2.His accents and storytelling skill brought this already brilliant piece of historical fiction to life. Now Brennus the Gaul, Tarquinius the Etruscan soothsayer and Romulus, bastard son of a Roman nobleman, are prisoners of Parthia. If you haven’t, pick that one up now because we get little reintroduction to these characters and their backstories. Para los que conozcáis a Ben Kane deciros que es un más de lo mismo a los que nos tiene acostumbrados. Refers to the practice of some Roman military leaders, who would commit suicide following a devastating defeat by literally falling on the point of their own swords.

What I particularly like about Ben Kane books though is the fact that because he tells the story from both sides of the conflict, he is able to deliver a truly well rounded and complete history of the events. The Falling Sword” continues the struggle between Macedonia and Rome, the same four main characters giving a wide ranging scope and depth to the conflict from the rulers to the soldiers.

The battle was won for Rome by a Tribune acting independently and splitting off twenty maniples from one battle and driving into the back of the other phalanx that was having more success. The two clear leads were Felix, the Roman legionary who was dishonorably discharged and illegally rejoined, and Demetrios, the Macedonian sailor who became a phalangite and rose through the rankers by his loyalty to King Philip.

And he gets the military lifestyle very well, even if I suspect that even the most dedicated soldier would have had more interactions with the civilian world and extramilitary activities than this. This is a historical novel centred around the battle of Kynoskephalae, which effectively was the end of the Macedonian control of Greece, and the start of the decline of the phalanx as the powerful unit of the time.
