I liked the characters in this probably as much as the ever-changing plot. The character of Kyler and Durzo were by far my favourites because they each go through some personal battles with morals and integrity. I thought Kyler grew a lot over the course of this book and he was ace by the end of it. He really develops as he faces many trials and problems, he trains hard, fights harder, and he's an all-round bad-ass (well, when he's thinking hard enough to outwit those he faces). Su única posibilidad de escapar a la miseria y el miedo constantes es convertirse en aprendiz de asesino. Y no de cualquier asesino, sino del mejor: Durzo Blint. While most of his contemporaries used shadows to convey information about an object’s form or position in space, Rembrandt gave his shadows psychological weight. Naturally, there are plenty of photographers who have used shadows to brilliant effect – some of my favourites include Paul Strand, Edward Weston and Robert Adams. When you look at these artworks, think about the role that shadows play in each scene. What roles do shadows play?

The story takes place in Cenaria City, the capital of the Kingdom of Cenaria. Cenaria is on a fictional continent called Midcyru. It begins in the city's lawless slum sector, known as the Warrens, then expands to the East Side, home to the middle and upper classes. Cenaria is a monarchy, with a king and dynastic succession, but the true power is held by a criminal council, the Sa'Kage (Lords of the Shadows), who control and monopolize criminal activity and trade while manipulating the king and the succession through extortion and assassination. Resilient (Wisdom). If you’re playing a low-level campaign, this feat is incredible. Gaining proficiency in Wisdom saving throws and increasing your own Wisdom score by one is great. If your campaign goes to 14th level or higher, though, this feat is mostly dead weight, since you gain proficiency in all saving throws once you gain the Diamond Soul feature at 14th level. This shadow of yours, again?” the other soldier replied, sighing. “No, and no one else in the garrison has, either.”A monk’s monastic tradition typically grants them additional ways to use their ki points to create mystical effects. Monks who follow the Way of Shadow use their own ki manipulate light and darkness, and sight and sound, to make themselves all but undetectable. The monk gains access to four subclass features at 3rd, 6th, 11th, and 17th level. You can read all of the Way of Shadows features in the Player’s Handbook. In summary, your subclass features allow you to:

The second soldier scoffed, and didn’t respond. They walked in silence for a few seconds more, passing under the long shadow of the defensive wall. Three other guards walked atop the wall, their gazes affixed on the narrow pass beyond the fortress.

Any character that sees their name written more than once in the book was eventually given their own perspective, leaving the storytelling muddy and confused. I was often left spellbound, only to be unexpectedly dragged away to some irrelevant and boring passage. I’m all for cliffhangers, but they have to be done well, and Weeks hasn’t the writing know-how to pull this off. Rat has beaten Doll Girl almost to death, and given her terrible scars on her face. Durzo plans to leave Azoth, but he insists that he will kill Rat within the week, and pleads with Durzo to save Doll Girl. Despite his protests that life is empty and meaningless, Durzo finally concedes. He finds Solon drinking, poisons him, and takes him to Doll Girl. He tells Solon that he can have the antidote if he heals Doll Girl, which he does. The next day Azoth wakes up to find out that Rat has raped Jarl and made him "one of his girls". Rat wants to punish Azoth for pursuing Durzo but Ja'laliel forbids it. However, Ja'laliel is terminally ill, and Azoth is afraid that Rat will soon be the guild head. Azoth plans his revenge on Rat for Jarl's rape, trying to turn the guild against him, but Rat lets him play the hero. I will say there were a few wonderful scenes, especially in the first half, but Weeks needs to learn to linger, slow down, and build these scenes up for a greater payoff. We're barely ever asked to consider something momentous before rushed along to the next bright, shiny plot-object.

It turns out that Durzo happened to love after all, and most things he told Kyler always came to pass, if he told the truth that is. You know what, I have NO IDEA why I waited so long to read a Brent Weeks book. i have been told by various people that he's like marmite and you either love or hate his writing and for me that was a little intimidating I suppose and I wasn't sure which way it was going to go. However, after James convinced me to start with the first book in this series I am thoroughly happy and elated that I did follow his advice, and I can say with certainty that Weeks is a new favourite author for me. If you’ve ever taken drawing lessons, you will be familiar with the ‘egg shading’ exercise. Basically, it involves using various pencil strokes and shading techniques to fully describe the form of a humble egg. While it’s designed for beginner artists, the exercise is great for photographers too. And that friend of mine who wasn't a fan - she wasn't a fan of The Warded Man either, which I loved, and I have to say that this is probably the most enjoyable read I've had since devouring Brett's The Warded Man several years ago. Like that book TWoS takes what I loved about 80's fantasy and grows it up for the more demanding, hard-edged tastes of today. Definitely recommended. Often characters or descriptions would stray so far into the obscure, uninformed or downright confusing that the story would halt and leave you scratching your head. Whole pieces of information were left by the wayside and dragged the reader down with it.Durzo Blint is Cenaria’s most feared killer. Azoth is a frightened little boy living on the streets. Through a series of coincidences, the two come together in the dark underworld of the capital, and the guild rat becomes the assassin’s apprentice. Aprende de esta gente todo lo que vaya a hacerte más fuerte, y olvida el resto. Escucha mucho, habla poco, ponte bien y disfruta. Puede ser la única temporada feliz de tu vida”.

You won’t choose your subclass until you reach 3rd level as a monk, so use this time as a 1st- and 2nd-level monk to figure out if the Way of Shadows is really the right path for you. Are you enjoying the fantasy of being a stealthy infiltrator? Do you feel like you need more martial artistry in your game, and would prefer to be a monk of the Way of the Open Hand? Or are you learning that you want to use explosive magic, and would prefer to wield the power of the Way of the Four Elements? Feats First let me praise the book though, so that any of my grievances will not necessarily dissuade you from reading The Way of Shadows. Shadows can be a great way of leading a viewer’s eye around a picture. When an area of deep shadow contrasts with an area of bright light the eye is naturally drawn to this part of the frame. What’s more, when the transition from dark to light is sudden, it creates a sharp edge or line that the eye will try to follow. It turns out that I tend to like what people tend to like ... who knew? I don't enjoy every popular book but I do generally find out that there's a good reason why they're popular.

A travelling mage, Solon Tofusin, arrives at the Gyre estate. He is on a mission from the prophet Dorian to help Lord Gyre. When he finds out Duke Gyre has gone to Screaming Winds, he plans to head there immediately, but his plans are disrupted when he finds out that Logan has also been named Lord Gyre. Logan forces him to spar, and Solon humiliates him. He tells him that Logan's soldiers have been losing to him on purpose, which infuriates Logan. He tells his men to treat him as no more than an equal; he is soon going to join his father at Screaming Winds, and if they truly love him, they should be preparing him for the battles there. He apologizes to Solon, who is impressed with Logan and decides to stay with him, at least for now.
