If you're already thinking ahead to Christmas, you couldn't go wrong with this for a fun gift to entertain the whole family. Fortunate, because it helped us appreciate how fundamentally fun the whole concept of LEGO Games can be – fun for people who love LEGOs, fun for people who don’t know anything about LEGOs. And with three difficulty levels to choose from (although we never made it past basic bearing in mind we were playing with a six year old and a three year old), you can make it as easy or difficult as you want.

By having limited pieces to choose from, it requires the kids to think broadly and use their imagination to work with what they have. If at times somebody gets it right after just one or two bricks, so be it – it is far preferable to silent moments where one builds and others wait. It really adds to the atmosphere when you build and others are constantly commenting on the building process and what your MOC looks like, certainly a novel LEGO building experience that.Aside from the occasional laugh when a single white 2×4 is correctly guessed to be a husky sleigh, most of the time it will still take a completed design before players start getting close with their answers. We modified the rules to allow the preschooler to play – he could make anything he wanted, where as we had to build from the prompt on our cards. The recommended age for the LEGO Creationary Game is 7 plus, but we managed to turn it into a family game when we changed the rules. The known theme allows other players to start guessing immediately, which turns out to be a big part of the fun. Creationary was designed by LEGO Game designer, and initial conceptualizer of the whole, shall we say, concept of LEGO Games: Cephas Howard.

It was lovely to watch the team work between the pairs, as we stipulated in our rules, that both kids had to build, not just the oldest. During our “Tasting” of the game, we were fortunate to have one player who had never really played with LEGOs.

And it was a great excuse for some quiet family time sitting down around the table together, in-between a weekend that was otherwise full of birthday parties and sugar highs. The rules describe four different ways to play: one person builds and everyone else guesses, one person guesses and as many of four people build, two teams play simultaneously – each with one builder, and race to be the first to identify the object being built; and finally everybody plays as one team, racing against the clock – one player building, everyone guessing, seeing how many items they can identify before the time (whatever time they decide on) has elapsed.
