About this deal

Witchcraft is such an integral part of my life, I don’t know what I’d do or be without it. Over the years, I’ve explored many different aspects of the craft. And it’s led me to believe that most witches are more than one type and typically change types as their practice matures. Many witches want to label themselves as a certain type of witch. Well, there are PLENTY types of witches to choose from. Here are just a few. Then read to the end and find out why it doesn’t truly matter! First, What Is Witchcraft Today?

Satanic Witch: A witch that lives by the seven Satanic tenets and is strongly against the constructs of a dictatorial society; has nothing to do with worshiping the Christian's idea of Lucifer. Devil-worshiping does exist elsewhere under the broad realm of witchcraft, neither is exclusive to one another.

Background

The short answer to this question really is: that's up to you. What I will do however, is talk about what it means to me and how I try and guide people through my workshops and courses. Alexandrian Witch: A witch who practices the magic founded by Alex and Maxine Sanders in the 1960s with a focus on ritual and ceremonial magic. Millar pointed out an ironic dichotomy in early-modern witchcraft imagery: Witches were either young and seductive or old and haggard. The former group could supposedly join with the devil to make men lose control of their senses, while the latter, post-menopausal group offered no financial or reproductive benefit to the men who controlled society. In 1487, German clergyman Heinrich Kramer produced the best-known treatise on witchcraft, Malleus Maleficarum, which spurred the prosecution of witches and the persecution of women at large.

Whether your reference point is the Bible or one of Shakespeare's plays, witches are often made out to be hideous and nefarious creatures. They are largely depicted as women in art and stories, but there are cases of real men and children who were also tried and executed as witches. The idea of witchcraft has been a cause of mass panic at various points, and this combination of fear and interest created fertile ground for artists. Folk Witch: "Cunning Folk" ; hereditary witches who follow a path similar to British witchcraft and used their magic and skills for practical purposes which were passed down through generations; *not common* This type of witch finds himself or herself longing to “go home” and be among the stars. Maybe you find the starseed concept resonates with you deeply. Maybe you have a lifelong addiction to astrology, astronomy, and all things aeronautics. If you find you don’t care about what happens here on earth as much as you do the planetary rotations, comets, and other galaxies, then you are a cosmic witch. 18. Grey WitchUsing art in spell work and ritual has a long heritage. Often we think of chanting, music or dance as a way of opening hidden portals but visual art can do this too. There are many artists who explicitly used art as an occult practice, such as Hilma Af Klint or Marjorie Cameron. Today there is a growing number of performance artists that are exploring the relationship between esotericism and creativity. Even artists who would never consider themselves to be part of the occult have discussed the spiritual and transformative nature of creating art.I have experienced profound change through using art in my craft and I believe it has made me a more effective witch (whatever effective means!).

For her recent photo series “Major Arcana: Witches in America” (2016–17), photographer Frances F. Denny traveled across the United States to capture women who consider themselves witches. The series as a whole suggests a nationwide network of spiritualists and activists with shared goals and rituals. Across the Atlantic Ocean, photographer Virginia Lupu has captured Romanian witches who, as a group, perform spells for both romantic and political purposes. As we approach Halloween, the particular time of year when the occult receives mainstream attention, witches and magic-workers, it’s a great time to listen to creative magic practitioners about the details of witchcraft. Tully explains: “Witches usually call this seasonal festival ‘Samhain’...Samhain or Halloween is the time when the ‘veil between the worlds’ is believed to be thinnest, so the dead walk amongst us and we can commune with our ancestors”. People with solid exposure technique and the ability to capture low light images are always in demand in paranormal circles. Though the narrative around witchcraft shifts across the centuries in Europe, one thing that remained consistent was its connection to women. The subject was leveraged as a way of commenting on women's beauty, sexuality and morality. In John William Waterhouse's painting titled The Magic Circle, we see a witch standing next to a smoking cauldron. Unlike the previous examples, she's fully clothed, youthful and relatively good-looking. She holds a wand in her hand as she draws a protective circle around herself. Inside the circle are beautiful flowers, and outside are frogs and ravens – both of which are associated with witchcraft. These ideas evolve into sexist perceptions of women as beings of loose morals that entrap men. It screams "This is me, deal with it" and ask us, the viewers, to also step out of our comfort zone and give the anime's different art-style a chance. The result is a perfect harmony between the story, the characters, the anime, the style and even the viewer, urging us to break-out and long for a version of ourselves that is free and, ultimately, happy.Even in the Greco-Roman world, the legends about witches were sources of pottery decorations or the subject matter behind frescoes and sculptures,' says Deanna. Papadopoulos creates anthropomorphic sculptures of women in debaucherous states—romping, revelling, and drunken. The figures in her installation T he Great Revel of Hairy Harry Who Who: Orgy at the Onion Cellar (2015) are made from wood splashed with self-tanner and synthetic hair. Papadopoulos describes them as “over-jeweled and made-up women who’ve become bedraggled while cavorting in a rather nefarious fashion.” If The Great Revel of Hairy Harry… signals a hangover, it also contains the cure with ingredients to aid digestion—milk of magnesia, hair of the dog—as the women’s nefarious activities and healing practices converge. Hedge Witch: A solitary witch that holds both kitchen and green witch attributes, such as making healing potions and brews in the kitchen; think of the old women in the woods archetype.
