Speaking of Anna, for a girl he has never physically talked to (only online) his behavior towards her is disgusting. Not only is he extremely possessive, referring to her as ‘My Anna’ and screaming at a boy to stop him simply touching her arm, but there was also an instance in which he feels a surge of extreme anger to realize Anna wasn’t in the lunch hall. Allow me to reiterate, he doesn’t personally know this girl. She doesn’t know him. Yet, he feels fury when she isn’t around him. If that wasn’t bad enough, he is so creepy around her, his entire inner monologue is sexualising this girl. Daydreaming about what her bra looks like in the middle of class and wanting to take it off, hoping her skirt will hitch up, staring at her legs, calling her sexy. It’s gross. I understand, he’s a 16 year old boy with raging hormones but also making it his goal to touch her by the end of the year while he’s behind the scenes, lying and manipulating her, calling her his like she’s property is disturbing. However, setting that aside, I'll say it again, the writing is really good and holds your interest. The author manages to evoke all these emotions in you (trust me, it's going to be different for everyone) and it's obvious Erin has a way with words. But towards the end of the book, things started to feel a little… dangerous. I’ve more or less found good coping techniques to fight my mind when it comes to thinking about suicide, but I had to set the book down and mentally walk away at times because that way he was talking about his suicide felt cathartic almost. And every time I did that, I was worried that someone somewhere who has less effective coping techniques might be affected by this (That risk is constant whenever someone writes about suicide, so that’s no fault of the author in my opinion).

As we near New Year's Eve, Butter constructs a final menu, and considers measures to make sure he succeeds in this attempt. He is has an anaphylactic reaction to strawberries? Onto the menu they go, but not too early - he wants to put on a good show. It is macabre and absolutely gut-wrenching. He was up in Airdrie two weeks ago, to discuss “SpudUlike by James Martin” with owner Ronnie Bartlett and meet the farmers who produce the potato. According to Martin, they’ve gone for the Maribel variety, which they cook with no salt or oil, though Martin promises they’ll still have a crispy skin. You've got the ultimate larder”, he says. “Whether it's fruit, potatoes or seafood. I'm very jealous”.

If you think you’re going to make butter out of that 1/4 cup of heavy cream leftover from making Never-Fail Biscuits, think again. It’s difficult to make butter from anything less than about 1 1/2 cups (12 ounces, 340g) of cream; most full-size mixers and food processors simply don’t like dealing with small amounts of liquid. And with the yield of butter from cream ranging from about 35% to 50% (tops) by weight, it’s frankly not worth the effort (even if you do manage it) to start with a cup or less of cream and end up with just 6 or 7 tablespoons of homemade butter. When you're not able to access any suitable appliances, you can make butter simply by shaking heavy cream in a mason jar. Making butter with a Mason jar I've mixed feelings about this book. As soon as I read the blurb, I wanted to get my hands on Butter. I expected a powerful, emotional novel and I'll admit, the writing's actually pretty good but sadly, the protagonist, Butter, pissed me off. I'm not sure how I can love a book when I don't like the main guy in it. WARNING: THIS REVIEW DISCUSSES SUICIDE. If you’re having suicidal thoughts or ideation, reach out to someone. It can be anyone you trust: a teacher, a parent, a summer counselor, a coworker, a friend, a sibling, or another loved one. If they don’t listen or don’t respond well, DO NOT GIVE UP. I really didn't like Butter as a character, either, and it wasn't just because of the inadequate writing. He was mean. He lashed out at everyone, even people that truly cared about him. And understand that being as obese as he was can have psychological symptoms like depression, but that doesn't mean he's has the right to be an asshole. He just wasn't a very nice guy. There's also the part where his doctor tells him to do exactly what he shouldn't do: eat more carbs. See, carbs are sugar. Carbs cause hyperglycemia, which is clearly Butter's problem. Yes, you need like 40% of your diet to be carbs if you're diabetic, but what you really need to focus more on is fiber and proteins and fats. He could have at least specified complex carbs, but nope, apparently empty calories are a-okay in this household.

I wasn't sure what to think when I started this novel. The premise disturbed and fascinated me, but I had put off reading it for a few months since it had arrived in our library. I should have read it the minute it entered our doors. I finished it in a day and it is occupying a dark corner of my brain, and may do so for some time. Let’s get on with things. This is the story of a boy called Butter. (I’ll let him tell you how he got that moniker.) . . . . Thankfully, I put aside any hasty negative assumptions and read up on homemade butter. As it turns out, it’s simple to make if you have a stand (or hand) mixer, a blender, or a food processor. Within about 10 minutes, you can turn cream into solid butter. Lange's writing is great, and she nails the male voice well. The premise and execution work with the characters. This'll appeal to both girl and guy readers who like realistic stories. It is relevant.
